Bristlecone Pine ForestBristlecone Pines are the oldest living thing anywhere on earth - up to five millennium. This forest is located in the White Mountains which is the mountain chain just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The ancient trees are located at the crest of the mountains and the road to the forest provides the superb panorama of the Sierra Nevada peaks. This Forest Service road begins at California route 168 near the town of Big Pine. To get to the Bristlecone Pines road, drive north from Vegas on US 95 past Beatty. (Beatty is your last chance for gas and food.) Exit US 95 at Nevada Route 266 and continue on 266 until reaching California Route 168. Prior to reaching Big Pine, is the road to the forest and vista; watch for the Forest Service sign. Still further west on Route 168, you get to travel through a deep lava canyon There are no services along this route however Big Pine has a number of motels and restaurants.
